Transcutaneous oxygen measurement (TcPO2) in India is a non-invasive test that measures the amount of oxygen reaching the skin of your foot, directly predicting whether a diabetic wound has enough blood supply to heal. Why Transcutaneous Oxygen Measurement Matters
Healing needs oxygen. While other tests measure pressure or flow in the main arteries, TcPO2 measures the oxygen actually delivered to the skin, which is what a wound depends on. The IWGDF 2023 guidelines recognise skin oxygen measurement as a useful test for judging healing potential in the diabetic foot.
How TcPO2 Is Done
- Small sensors are gently attached to the skin of the foot and a reference site.
- The sensors warm the skin slightly to open the tiny surface vessels.
- The oxygen passing through the skin is measured in mmHg.
- Readings above about 40 mmHg suggest good healing potential; below 30 mmHg suggests poor healing.
- The test is painless and needs you to rest quietly while it records.
