Neuropathy Assessment
Diabetic Neuropathy Assessment in India
Numbness in the feet is one of the most dangerous, and most ignored, symptoms of diabetes. At Elegance Diabetic Foot & Ulcer Clinic (EDFC), our diabetic neuropathy assessment is designed to catch nerve damage early, well before a patient loses the ability to feel a cut, blister, or burn on their own foot.
This assessment is led by Dr. Ashutosh Shah and forms a core part of our Comprehensive Foot Evaluation, within EDFC's broader Assessment & Diagnostics programme.
Why a Neuropathy Assessment Matters
Diabetic peripheral neuropathy develops slowly and painlessly in most patients. Many only discover it after an unnoticed wound has already turned into an ulcer or infection. A structured nerve damage test for diabetic foot patients can:
- Detect loss of protective sensation before an injury goes unnoticed
- Distinguish between mild, moderate, and severe neuropathy
- Identify whether numbness, tingling, or burning is nerve-related or circulation-related
- Feed directly into your overall Diabetic Foot Risk Assessment grading
- Guide footwear and self-care advice specific to your level of sensation loss
Dr. Shah often tells patients: "Pain is a warning system. When neuropathy switches that system off, we have to test for danger instead of waiting to feel it."
What Our Neuropathy Assessment Includes
- Symptom history: numbness, tingling, burning, or "walking on cotton wool" sensations
- Monofilament testing: a standard, painless pressure-sensitivity test used across India and internationally to check protective sensation
- Vibration perception testing: using a tuning fork or biothesiometer to assess nerve fibre function
- Reflex testing: checking ankle reflexes where relevant
- Temperature and pinprick sensation checks: to assess different nerve fibre types
- Correlation with vascular status: since poor circulation can worsen neuropathy symptoms, often assessed alongside our Vascular Assessment
- Final grading and care plan: documented severity level with specific home-care and follow-up instructions
Who Should Get This Assessment

- Patients who no longer feel pain from small cuts, blisters, or hot surfaces
- Anyone with a history of unnoticed wounds or ulcers
